Faithfulness is a beautiful characteristic of God, revealing His unchanging nature and making Him completely reliable and trustworthy. Therefore, when we trust in God, we have a firm and secure foundation on which to build our lives.
Throughout Scripture, we see God’s faithfulness shine forth in the lives of His children. Even in our own lives, we can see God’s steady hand providing what we need and continually guiding our steps. Yet how often do we struggle to believe that God will come through for us? And why do we doubt? We examine our own wavering hearts and the fickleness of others and measure God by human capacity—we make God in our own image. If people struggle with consistency and dependability, then maybe God does too.
Friend, here is the truth: when we struggle to believe that God is faithful in our lives, we find ourselves scrambling for reassurance instead of resting in truth. Nevertheless, what does God’s Word say?
If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.(2 Timothy 2:13, NASB)
God is faithful regardless of our doubt. The Bible not only guarantees His trustworthiness but also reminds us of it so often that it is astonishing we forget. If we have access to the heavenly reality of God’s faithfulness through His Word, why do we often ask Him to send people or signs to encourage us and remind us of who He is? While God can certainly use these avenues to minister to us, why would we overlook the fact that through Christ and His Word we have continual access to His faithfulness whenever we need it?
You may be discouraged today and desire for God to speak to your heart about your circumstances. I want to challenge your heart posture if you are waiting for Him to meet with you. Beloved, He is with you now and is meeting your every need through His Son and His Word. You have everything you need to be encouraged and to move forward with hope as you meditate on Scripture and receive its truth.
Consider David’s process. The Psalms give us an intimate look into his relationship with God—almost like a personal diary. David would come before the Lord and lay out his cares honestly. Often, the initial focus of his prayers centered on his problems, fear, pain, and anger. At times, he even questioned whether God would come through for him:
O LORD, how long will you forget me? Forever?
How long will you look the other way?
How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul,
with sorrow in my heart every day?(Psalm 13:1–2, NLT)
However, David did not stop at the question, nor did he wait for God to speak to his situation. Instead, he recalled God’s faithfulness and encouraged himself in the Lord:
But I trust in your unfailing love;
I will rejoice because you have rescued me.
I will sing to the LORD,
because he is good to me.(Psalm 13:5–6, NLT)
By the end of the exchange, we see a shift in David. He moves from feeling as though he is drowning to standing firm on the foundation of God’s faithfulness. He does not wait for God to affirm what he already knows. Instead, he chooses to partake in truth and clothe himself in the reality of God.
Like David, you can access God’s faithfulness amid your burdens. When you feel the walls closing in on you, you may be tempted to forget God’s goodness in your life. Satan would love nothing more than for you to believe that God has abandoned you, leaving you alone amid hardship. Regardless of what you believe or feel about your life, God remains faithful.
Instead of scrambling for reassurance, choose a response of faith today. Dive into God’s Word and meditate on His faithfulness in the Scriptures. Be encouraged in the midst of your difficulties as you stand on truth. God is your constant—unchanging and sure. He is faithful to His children and is with you in every circumstance. Rest in that reality today. You can trust Him.
Forever, O LORD, your word is settled in heaven
[standing firm and unchangeable].
Your faithfulness continues from generation to generation;
you have established the earth, and it stands [securely].
They continue this day according to your ordinances,
for all things [all parts of the universe] are your servants.
If your law had not been my delight,
then I would have perished in my time of trouble.
I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have revived me and given me life.
I am yours; save me [as your own],
for I have [diligently] sought your precepts
and required them [as my greatest need].
The wicked wait for me to destroy me,
but I will consider your testimonies.
I have seen that all [human] perfection has its limits
[no matter how grand and perfect and noble];
your commandment is exceedingly broad
and extends without limits [into eternity].
(Psalm 119:89–96, AMP)
